Resizing: How Much Office Space do you Need in this New Normal?

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced us to rethink the way we perform our jobs. Many companies have instructed their employees to work from the safety of their homes.  But not all the work can be done remotely. Hence the emergence of a hybrid work environment, where many employees can work from home while the necessary staff can come to the office for work that might require them in person. But still, is the space design we are utilizing right now adequate in this new norm?

Obviously, we might come up with a new design that incorporates the necessary safety measures.

What are the factors that have a hand in designing your office space?

That might include:

  • physical dimensions of workspace
  • furniture
  • Ability to provide privacy
  • How much personalization can be done without compromising structural integrity
  • Soundproofing
  • The working environment, i.e., are you working in an open space or private room?
  • The material of the walls
  • Type of light you are utilizing. Is it artificial or natural?
  • Freedom of movement

What factors can impact the design of your office space?

That includes nature of work, body dimension of the employee, individual preference, and an individual’s position in the hierarchy of corporation.

Why do we need office space when many people are already working remotely?

Yes, most of the work can indeed be done from alternate locations. But the nature of every work is different. Not all jobs can be done from house. And even for those jobs that can be done from home, there are many other factors to consider. When you work with others in a proper workspace, you gain a lot of experience and knowledge. New workers and employees can be trained adequately in such an environment. Senior employees can train the newer ones much better in person and give them small tips to improve their work performance. The process of learning is not limited to only formal educations or reading from books; it also involves observing, listening, and interacting with others. You also get the chance to meet new people and establish connections that might be helpful in both your personal and professional life.

What points do we need to focus on when remodeling our offices?

We need to focus on:

  • How will the business and, in turn, the nature of work change in the future?
  • How much space do we need from others for the purpose of social distancing?
  • What factors can stop us from making our work environment healthier for us?
  • The layout of the workspace. Is the office providing its workers with much needed personal space, or are they utilizing an open floor plan?

Why do we need to resize our work office or space?

If you are already working in closed, private rooms and offices, there is not much you need to do other than making sure that you cycle the air in the room. Suppose you have cubicles separated by some solid barrier like wood or glass, which is also better for the employees, as working in them might be safer. In that case, these cubicles provide you enough space to move around freely without encroaching on other’s space. However, if you are working in an open space, that is dangerous in the current situation. Try to get the temporary barriers that might separate you from others. Get your cubicle resized if it’s minimal, hinders your movement, and especially if it is completely exposed to others from sides.

When a company gives its employees a welcome and secure workspace, they will become more productive and efficient, creating a positive environment. But how is that possible when every individual is concerned for his or her safety? Even though the corporates might be rotating the employees that have to work from home and office, that is not enough. You have to make sure that the office employees have enough space that provides physical and mental comfort. Only then can they do their best.
